Blessed Michael McGivney
The Knights of Columbus was founded by Blessed Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest who dedicated his life to serving families, supporting those in need, and strengthening communities through faith and fraternity.
Born in 1852 and ordained a priest in 1877, Father McGivney recognized the challenges facing Catholic families in his community, particularly widows, orphans, immigrants, and families struggling with financial hardship. In response, he founded the Knights of Columbus on March 29, 1882, creating a brotherhood centered on faith, charity, unity, and service.
Father McGivney's legacy continues through Knights of Columbus councils around the world. His example inspires members to put their faith into action by supporting families, helping those in need, and serving their local communities.
Blessed Michael McGivney was beatified on October 31, 2020, and is remembered as the founder of the Knights of Columbus, an advocate for Christian family life, and a protector of those in need. His life and ministry remain at the heart of the Knights' commitment to faith, charity, and fraternity.
